First off, I’m not a runner. I do try to walk for exercise periodically, but overall, I just like the look and feel of running shoes. With that said, finding the right pair takes a lot of work.
If you’re a big guy like me, it can make it that much more difficult. If you’ve been through the struggle before, you know what I mean. We carry more weight. Our strides are different. We have unique needs when it comes to shoes.
Over the past few years, I’ve been trying different shoes and I’ve found some that aren’t so great, but I’ve also found some that I think you’ll love. I wrote this guide to hopefully help you get past some of the struggles I’ve had.
Things to Consider When Choosing Running Shoes as a Heavy Man
When I first started paying more attention to the shoes I wore, I went to a specialty running shop. The store I visited was a mom and pop type place that is local to me, but you can always look for one that is local to you.
Another option is Road Runner Sports. It’s both an online and national (U.S.) chain that specializes in running and walking shoes. They have a store locator here and have a lot of good shopping tools on their site.
When I visited the specialty store I learned a lot about what to consider when picking a good running shoe, especially as a big and overweight man. I knew to look for good cushioning and fit, but during my visit was the first time I had heard to consider things like weight distribution and stability.
Here’s a list of a few things I’d recommend to keep in mind when you go shopping for your own pair:
Weight Distribution
You’ll want your shoes to distribute your weight evenly. Shoes with supportive midsoles and sturdy outsoles can help.
There’s a balance there because the softer the cushioning, the easier the outsoles can break down. My shoe store was able to show me where my weight lands in my normal stride and choose shoes and insoles accordingly.
Cushioning and Support
This is the one we all know. Cushioning. I still feel like this is the most important feature for a big, heavy, guy. Getting shoes with extreme cushioning changed how I was able function during long outings.
I talked about this in “Don’t Let the Wrong Shoes Make You Miserable“. I live by the manta, “Get all the cushion you can get!
Stability
Well, I say “get all the cushion you can get”, but I’ll be honest. The first pair of Hokas I ever tried on felt like I was walking on sponges. It actually made me feel like I had to concentrate not to get off balance. So, maybe I should revise my statement to, “Get all the cushion you can get and still retain stability”.
The photo to the left shows how stability breaks down over time. These are my old Brooks after about 6 months of wear.
If you can find a full cushion shoe that has a wide base, it’s probably your best bet. I’ve had great luck with Brooks Glycerine, New Balance Fresh Foam models, and Hoka Arahi. Hoka’s highest level of cushioning, the Graviota and Stinson, lose too much stability for me.
Size and Fit
Last, but not least, make sure the shoes fit correctly. This seems like a no-brainer, but it may not be a simple as you might think. I wore size 12 Asics Gels, for years. They were my favorite shoe. I thought my sore feet were just a thing I would have to deal with for being so overweight.
When I visited the running store, they asked what size I wear. I said, “12”. They measured my foot length, width, and across the top, and said I was an 11 1/2 Wide. I had been wearing a larger shoe to make up for needing extra width. Sure, my foot would fit, but the extra length, put the cushioning and the arch support into the wrong place on my feet. The correct size really does matter.
Best Running Brands for Heavy Men
First, I want to point out that there are some great articles out there such as RunRepeat’s “7 Best Running Shoes for Heavy Men in 2024” and the Runner’s World article, “The 5 Best Running Shoes for Heavy Men — And How to Find Your Perfect Fit“.
The first has a lab and a bunch of testers that ran 30-50 miles in them. The second, had a famous group of marathoners (who are known for being overweight) provide input.
I still feel I have valueable insight that is different from theirs. I can only assume I’m much heavier, and I don’t want these shoes for running. Mine is more of a running shoe guide for big men who don’t run.
Personal Experience
Additionally, I’ve personally tried a number of Asics, Brooks, Hoka, and New Balance over the past few years. I’ve also owned a single pair of Adidas and Saucony in that same time. Many of my favorite brands overlapped with the other articles’ favorites, but not very many of the actual shoes did.
This would be my list of brands for my favorite shoes:
- BROOKS
- HOKA
- NEW BALANCE
- ASICS
Top Running Shoes for Heavy Men
Here are my choices for the best running shoes for heavy men:
- Brooks Glycerine
The Brooks Glycerine is the one Brooks calls its “luxury model” and I can see why. It’s honestly one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever word. Even sliding your foot in without socks feels cool, soft, and plush. It has plenty of cushion, but still feels stable. I can wear these all day. I think they’re nearly the perfect shoe for a big guy like me. - Hoka Arahi
The Hoka Arahi is one of my favorite pair of shoes I’ve recently bought. It’s extremely cushioned, but not so much that it loses stability. Hoka touts a J-Frame technology that it credits with the extra support. I recently wore these for a 16 hour day full of standing and walking and they seemed almost equal to the Brooks Glycerine, with the exception of the softness across the top of the foot. - New Balance Fresh Foam 1080:
The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 features plush Fresh Foam cushioning and is another excellent choice for heavy runners. The Ultra Heel design provides a secure fit, while the Ortholite sockliner adds an extra layer of comfort. These aren’t quite as cushioning as my options for 1 and 2, but they are still one of my favorite everyday shoe.
How to Properly Fit Running Shoes for Heavy Men
Finding the perfect pair of running shoes is like finding a needle in a haystack – it takes time, patience, and a little bit of know-how. Here are some tips for ensuring a proper fit:
Measuring Foot Size:
Before you hit the stores, get measured professionally to ensure you’re buying the right size. Your feet can change size over time, so don’t rely on your old measurements.
Trying Different Widths:
If you have wide feet, don’t settle for narrow shoes that pinch and squeeze. Look for brands that offer wide-width options for a more comfortable fit.
Considering Arch Support:
Flat feet? High arches? Whatever your foot type, make sure your shoes provide adequate arch support to prevent discomfort and injury.
Testing for Comfort and Flexibility:
Don’t be afraid to walk or jog around in the shoes to see how they feel. Pay attention to any areas of discomfort or rubbing, as this could indicate a poor fit.
Consulting with Experts:
When in doubt, seek advice from knowledgeable sales associates or podiatrists who can offer personalized recommendations based on your specific needs and preferences.
Maintenance Tips for Running Shoes for Heavy Men:
Once you’ve found the perfect pair of running shoes, it’s essential to take care of them to ensure they last as long as possible. Here are some maintenance tips to keep in mind:
Cleaning and Drying:
After each run, wipe down your shoes with a damp cloth to remove dirt and sweat. Let them air dry thoroughly before wearing them again to prevent odor and bacteria buildup.
Rotating Shoes:
Give your shoes a break by rotating between multiple pairs. This allows them to air out and recover their shape, prolonging their lifespan in the process.
Replacing Insoles:
If you start to notice signs of wear and tear on the insoles, it’s time for a replacement. Investing in quality replacement insoles can help maintain support and cushioning, even as the rest of the shoe begins to wear down.
Checking for Wear and Tear:
Regularly inspect your shoes for signs of wear and tear, such as worn-out treads or loose stitching. If you notice any damage, it’s best to replace your shoes sooner rather than later to prevent discomfort and injury.
Proper Storage:
When you’re not wearing your shoes, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving them in hot cars or damp environments, as this can cause them to deteriorate faster.
