For years, it seemed like everytime I stepped on a scale I had to wonder if it would even weigh me. At 375, 400, and especially at my heaviest of 429 pounds, more often than not, it wouldn’t. I’d get the dreaded “ERR” or triple zeroes.
Story Time
When I was a part of the Exercise is Medicine program at my local gym. They had larger scales in the medical area, but the scales in the workout area and the locker rooms would never weigh me. One of my first personal goals during the program was to be able to get off the treadmill and step right onto the smaller scale a few steps away.
A few weeks into the program, I finally did it! I stepped on the scale one day and it showed 397. Even with that personal milestone, I was nowhere near light enough to weigh on most scales. As most of you probably know, the maximum capacity of a standard bathroom scale is 250 to 300 pounds.
Recently, I decided to look for a large capacity scale for my home. Along with a lot of research, I have personal experience with a few different high capacity scales. Overall, there are some scales that I feel confident recommending to you.
My Unique Perspective on Bath Scales
I have experience with a number of high capacity scales. That experience, coupled with nearly a lifetime of experiences as a big and tall man, I think I have a unique take when reviewing them. Most of the reviews focus on the type of display, accuracy, and features like body composition and bluetooth. Those are all important features, but as big men, we have different concerns when it comes to scales.
I’ve found the following 3 characteristics to be most important for big men:
- Maximum Capacity: This is the absolute most important detail, especially for us larger guys. It has to be able to weigh us.
- Platform Width: The scale needs to be wide enough for our wider stance.
- Durability: The scale needs to be made to last. It needs to withstand a lot of weight and should last for years.
